Published: Tuesday 29 October, 2013

Tea parties are traditionally associated with the English countryside or with little girls and their stuffed animals. Although some typically think of a tea party as a formal affair, it can be as casual or elaborate as you choose to make it. Whether a tea party is a pretend one for kids or a formal tea for adults, making the tea party table is key in setting up the occasion. Decorating your tea table is a major part of planning the perfect tea party. Approach decorating for your tea party with a clear idea of where it will be--either inside or outdoors. The right table decor can make any tea party feel cozy, classy and quaint. You can even find very attractive decorations at a dollar or thrift store.

Cover the tea party table with a theme-appropriate tablecloth. For a burst of color, use a tablecloth in a color that complements the teacups, such as blue or yellow; another option is to use plain white. Set the tables. Gather teapots, dishes, tea cups and utensils. Set a teacup, saucer, small plate for treats, teaspoon and napkin at each place setting on the tea party table. Place the plate on the table directly in line with the guest's chair. For a tea party, provide your guests with an assortment of flavored teas. Place additional decorations on your table. No matter what the theme, you can never go wrong with classic white china. Put out a cup with paper straws for each guest, and a linen napkin rolled in a napkin ring. Secure decorations to the ceiling and other areas if an indoor party.

Tea parties are meant to be dainty, therefore, should be kept elegant but simple. From the flowers to the teacups, it can all come together beautifully to form a comfortable, yet polished tea party table setting.
